When I first heard the title space and climate, my mind jumped to visions of astronauts, the ISS, and diagrams of stars. Interestingly, this video subverts that expectation and covers a much more familiar and (literally) down-to-earth kind of space: space between actions, thoughts, and words, weeks, feelings. It also discusses mental space, emotional space, and the amount and type of physical space on our earth.
There are so many kinds of space that we all too frequently forget to acknowledge, and this lack of acknowledgment can make our space feel all the more overwhelming. In climate work, especially, we may forget to take space from our work and allow ourselves to just be, away from the noise of our work.
In the video, Tamara mentions that there are times in her day or week when she makes a conscious effort not to think about climate change at all. As someone who struggles to do this, I so admire and respect this effort. I am inspired by the notion that we can achieve space from climate action and the heaviness that it so often imposes. Creating space has the capacity to revitalize us, and doing so can recharge our work in meaningful ways. I found this video a helpful and hopeful reminder about the
value
of
space.
