In our recent/June lobby day meeting, our conservative senator made a comment about support for Permitting reform...
"permitting reform makes all the sense in the world, and you'll get support on the R side, but not on the D side and if it does make it through Congress the President will veto it."
Can you confirm my assumption that what the senator is referring to is that the D's would object/not support a R's version of a bill, but are in favor of permitting reform in general. Do you know of a R's bill that is perhaps in discussion or even in process and that our senator might be referring to?
Hi @Tom Utley. I wouldn't put much stock in what sounds like some very partisan comments here. There are of course bipartisan permitting reform negotiations, with the version that's made the most progress being negotiated by Senators Manchin and Barasso. If a bipartisan bill makes it through Congress, it's a safe bet that the president will sign it.
Republicans did have their own permitting reform proposal called H.R. 1, although that was a House and not Senate bill. In the Senate all the negotiations have been bipartisan.
