Open-ended questions invite others to share in their own words without leading them in a specific direction. Open-ended questions are one of the interaction techniques used with motivational interviewing. Please share some of the open-ended questions you've found to be most powerful in lobby meetings or interactions with others in a public setting?

Here are some open-ended questions we came up with for the 2020 June lobby meetings. They were adapted from a sales webpage on asking open-ended questions:
- What are the top priorities for the [MOC/committee] right now?
- What are some of the best ways to . . . ?
- In what ways has your thinking been changing in regard to market-based climate solutions?
- How are you feeling about the prospects of [name legislation]?
- Where does the MOC want to be 5 years from now in regard to emissions reductions?
- What opportunities do you see for moving legislation that reduces emissions?
- What challenges do you see, & how can we help?
- How should we be measuring success on climate, ocean acidification & ocean warming?
- What’s the biggest risk you see of not making progress on climate?
- Who do you see as the stakeholders in climate legislation?
- What is animating [MOC’s office/committee] right now?
- How are things going on the Climate Solutions Caucus?
- What can you share about discussions in the climate solutions caucus?
- The MOC is making climate a bridge issue; how can we help?
- To Staff: How do you interface w/ the climate solutions caucus?
- What roles have you been assigned on the the climate solutions caucus?
- Did our follow-ups help? Is there anything else we can provide to answer those questions?
- What questions/concerns do you have about the [report name] report?
- What does the bill need to contain to gain MOC’s support?
Would it be alright if we shared . . .?
We didn’t ask all these questions (darn!) but we asked many more open-ended questions than in past meetings.
