We’re talking up clean energy tax credits — and Senators are listening

At the end of May, the House of Representatives voted to pass a budget bill that would dramatically roll back America’s clean energy tax credits. In the days since that vote, CCLers have been working hard to encourage the Senate to protect these tax credits. Volunteers have:

• Sent 1,467 messages (and counting!) to Republican Senators, telling them loud and clear, “I urge you to reject the changes put forward by the House, and we encourage you to work toward a Senate version that protects the clean energy tax credits.”

• Generated 302 media hits over the last few weeks, including submissions of CCL’s latest op-ed template in at least 17 states around the country.

• Held targeted lobby meetings with Senate Finance Committee members, and been hard at work scheduling hundreds more lobby meetings for our visit to Capitol Hill next month.

We’ve seen some encouraging statements from Republican Senators that indicate our arguments are breaking through.

E&E News reported on Monday, “There are enough Senate Republicans keen on changing the House language to make a difference,” naming Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina, Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Sen. Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia.

Sen. John Curtis (R-UT, pictured above) took the discussion public in an op-ed in the Deseret News last week, where he pointed out that many of the tax credits under consideration “support strategic energy assets and a robust domestic economy.” The tax credits that “advance American energy independence and national security” should stay in place, he argues.

The Senate Finance Committee could release its portion of the bill as early as Friday. Let’s run through the tape for this part of the process. Use our easy action tool to keep the messages to Congress coming! If you’ve already written, send the link to a few friends with Republican Senators, and ask them to send messages too.

Take action this week

Every month, CCL’s national staff holds a virtual meeting for all chapters and volunteers. Our June meeting is coming up this Saturday at 1 p.m. ET / 10 a.m. PT.

CCL’s monthly meeting is your one-stop shop to:

• Hear the highlights and major news from CCL’s work in the last few weeks.

• Learn valuable insights from a guest speaker or featured CCL staffer. For June, we’re hearing from CCL Research Manager Dana Nuccitelli about what experts say we stand to lose if clean energy tax credits are rolled back.

• Take action together live during the meeting, and walk through the month’s Action Sheet.

• Remember that we’re all in this together! Hundreds of chapters, representing thousands of individual CCLers, tune into the call together every month.

Will you join us on Saturday?
