Vote on bipartisan infrastructure package expected next week

Exciting news! The bipartisan infrastructure package, which passed the Senate last month, is expected to be voted on in the House next week. Though the infrastructure package isn’t focused exclusively on climate change, it contains lots of funding aimed at addressing the problem, so we want to see it pass.

To encourage more “yes” votes on the bipartisan infrastructure package, CCL liaisons to Republican congressional offices have been sending the below letter to the offices they work with. Check it out:

Dear _________,

We are writing in support of  the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (H.R. 3684). A bipartisan piece of legislation, H.R. 3684 passed the Senate on August 10th with 19 Republican Senators voting in favor.

Bipartisanship is something that is important to us, and we know it’s not something that just happens. You have to work at it, and doing that work is essential to a vibrant, thriving democracy. It is also popular. Poll after poll shows us that the American people want their representatives to work together to form policy, and are more inclined to look favorably on bipartisan legislation. If enacted, this bill in particular presents a unique opportunity to tackle long neglected critical infrastructure issues in a bipartisan manner at a scale in line with the moment at hand.

Amongst these issues is the looming threat of climate change. While the most recent IPCC report encapsulates the scope of the challenges presented by rising carbon emissions to our nation’s economy, health and safety, this bill will provide us with many of the tools needed to meet them head on through American ingenuity, innovation and technological know-how.

Historically, America has tackled daunting challenges through technology and innovation. With this in mind the bill will establish an “Advanced Research Projects Agency-Infrastructure” at the Transportation Department which would help reduce costs of infrastructure projects, increase their energy efficiency along with improving the resilience of our nation’s electrical grid from the dual threats of extreme weather and cyber attacks.

The bill would provide important resources to expand our nation’s carbon management industry, providing billions of dollars in support towards developing regional hubs for carbon capture, sequestration and storage. Additional support would go towards providing federal support towards infrastructure projects designed to transport carbon dioxide along with facilitating the leasing of offshore areas for the purposes of storing the captured CO2 below the seafloor. Substantial investments in direct air are also provided for.

Furthermore, H.R. 3684 provides substantial support for a variety of clean energy projects which will benefit consumers and producers alike, along with galvanizing local economies.

We hope you will support The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (H.R. 3684) when it comes to the floor for a vote on September 27th.

Sincerely,

Citizens’ Climate Lobby
