2 Questions from staffer re: FPF and allies and tariffs x 2
During our lobby meeting today, our staffer asked two questions I didn't have an answer to.
The first was whether or not a foreign pollution fee would go on top of the current tariffs in place. I heard Dana's answer that we are looking for something long-term rather than temporary based on an administration, but I'm not sure how a foreign pollution fee would work with the current tariffs. Any ideas about that?
The second is how a foreign pollution fee might impact and cause pushback from our allies, like India. Responses?
Thanks!
Cheryl
Hi @Cheryl Clark. Any Congressionally-imposed tariff would be separate from an executive-imposed tariff (the latter of which could potentially soon be curtailed by the Supreme Court). A foreign pollution fee would specifically be applied to the extra carbon content of certain imported products compared to the US equivalent, which is separate from a tariff imposed for different reasons.
And responses by other countries will depend on the details of the legislation. For example, how easy it would be for lower-income countries to be largely exempted from a carbon tariff, which is something that Senator Cassidy's bill considers, for example. You could recommend that your office talk to Senator Cassidy's office about these sorts of considerations.
