Is red really going green?
Vince Lago, the Republican mayor of Coral Gables, Florida, eloquently asserted in his Sept. 14 Sunday Opinion commentary, “How did Florida’s GOP turn a blue bastion red? By going green.,” that Republican voters care as deeply as Democratic voters about protecting our environment. I hope congressional Republicans prove him right.
One way they can do so is to denounce the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposal to rescind its finding that greenhouse gas emissions adversely affect public health.
Lago also said that “Republicans support market-driven reforms such as carbon pricing and pollution tariffs.” The Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act was introduced in the House in four legislative sessions between 2018 and 2023. It would have established a fee on carbon at the port, mine or well, and distributed the proceeds to households pro rata. The two most recent versions (2021 and 2023) did not have any Republican co-sponsors. Going forward, will Republicans join in reintroducing and sponsoring a version of the bill?
Such stances might not necessarily be popular within the Trump administration. But for the sake of us all, I hope Republicans in Congress follow the mayor’s lead.
