Im a group leader with no knowledge of forestry. Ive taken the CCL trainings. A long time member and team leader is sending me articles from the Sierra Club and speakers that seem to promote different approaches to forest management. than CCL. There is potential for loss of trust in CCL. I am planning 2 different speakers for future meetings with different perspectives on forest management. Of course Im asking interested people to take the CCL healthy forest training but Im getting skepticism. What else do you all suggest I do?
I'm not surprised to find that there are controversies around forest management, given the complexity of the topic and the complexity of our relationship to forests and forest products.
My suggestion is to look for common ground with Sierra Club and other organizations. Acknowledge that we won't have exactly the same policy platform, but find places where we can agree and then work collaboratively towards those goals. I don't know Sierra Club's forestry platform but I would hope that there is at least some overlap.
It's also worth noting that dynamics around forestry vary a lot from region to region and dynamics in California are very different than in the east. CCL's policy platform is in broad brush strokes and not all elements will apply in every locale (eg some places need tree planting where others may need to focus on fire prevention).
Hope that helps.
I guess Im counting on CCL staff to help us find the common ground with major national organizations!
