This popped up in The Hill, of all places:
1 in 4 Americans considering putting off major life decisions out of fear of climate change: survey
Despite the hair-on-fire headline, the survey actually revealed some encouraging data! Really!
It showed that 80% of American adults accept the reality of climate change and 60% realize it is human-caused. Even more interesting to me, “55% of respondents believe that humanity needs to change its ‘way of life, live more frugally and put in place technological solutions to reduce climate change.’” Further, “52 percent do not think there is enough public conversation about solutions to pollution and climate change.”
Not enough public conversation about solutions? We’re here to help!
To me, an encouraging finding was that a majority of Americans seem inclined to sacrifice some lifestyle conveniences in order to tackle the problem. That may be a slim majority, but it’s still more than half.
As the peaceful foot soldiers of CCL, we should keep these findings in mind when crafting our messaging. Even if 25% of people are leery of having children because of climate change, more than twice as many people want to know more about solutions, and are willing to accept some limitations on their “way of life.” That’s good!
