Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Action Party

Hi CCL group leaders,

Last week we tried a house party approach to raise awareness about CCL and more specifically EICDA with the theme "Who says we can't have fun taking action on climate!"

I reached out to a couple of friends who are very supportive of the work I have been doing with CCL but are too busy to be involved themselves. I asked them if they would be willing to host an action party at their house where they invite their friends (non CCL people) to their "Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Action party".

My friends sent this invite out through evite asking for RSVP's to get a number count. About 25 people attended.

How the evening was organized:
Guests arrive and mingle for 30 minutes. Hosts did an introduction to CCL, the bill and their connection to me. I talked about CCL's positive approach and nonpartisan focus, how EICDA worked, high level messaging, and how the stations would work stressing that the key was to take action. I covered station #4 and asked my friends to host the other stations. To choose who goes to what station to start with, we asked everyone to count 1-4. The idea was to have people move from one station to the next every 20 minutes and that is what was suggested, but in reality we started and then the guests moved themselves around on their own:

We had number 1, 2, 3, and 4 on a 16"X20" piece of card stock so people knew where the stations were...
Station one: "Online actions" (message to congressperson online/social media link up)
Station two:  Beer refill
Station three: "Sign up" (Host your own party, donate)
Station four: "Speak up" (learn your Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend "Elevator talk", where people could practice talking about the bill themselves. Have fun creating a 90 second pitch)

We stressed that there is no obligation to participate and the response was great. This document spelled out the actions for each station and was included in the follow up thank you for attending the party email so they could also take action after the fact. We had three computers set up at station #1, and people rotated through using our online writing tool to write their MOC's. Station #2 was popular... At station #3 we raised $210 in cash and checks for our local chapter and had a computer where others were online donating to CCL national. We also had at least two people who offered to pay it forward and host the next Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Party modeled after this one. I covered station #4 and started out by handing out a full page of the 1/4 page flyer and asked people to take the full sheet, keep one for themselves and share the other three with their friends and neighbors stressing the importance of our high level messaging to build a consistent and simple message nationwide.

I was told that it exceeded expectations by those that attended!

It was fun and might be worth a try. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Best,

This is a fantastic idea, Bill! I particularly like the beer refill station! In light of April 2019 action sheet, you could tack in a station to let folks sign up for your Dialing Congress Campaign.

Has anyone else tried something like this to make climate action more fun?

Thank you Bill for such a fun, creative way to engage our communities in outreach!

And for some fun video of the event (better quality coming soon), here's a rough cut of what these parties can look and sound like :)
