The Podcast “All In The Mind” (which is a fantastic series) discussed motivation with one of the early researchers on "intrinsic motivation" - Richard Ryan. The talk helped me evaluate what I try to provide when working to motivate volunteers. His suggestion: people want autonomy, competency and connection. I can help with those. Toward the end there is a section that helps me think of my work with other volunteers as "helping them accomplish goals they want to accomplish" instead of "getting them to do things I want done".
