Friends of the Earth’s Climate & Energy Justice Team works to ensure science-based, equitable, and just approaches to the climate crisis. We seek to stop the exploitation of people and the environment by ending the extraction, development, and utilization of dirty energy, from cradle to grave. We similarly fight other false solutions to the climate crisis, such as solar and marine geoengineering. We envision energy systems that recognize and address systemic inequity, are ecologically balanced, and center human rights and community self-determination.

What We Are Looking For: 

Are you a seasoned, progressive self-starter? Are you passionate about addressing the climate crisis and fighting false solutions like climate geoengineering -- a wide range of dangerous, large-scale strategies to manipulate the Earth’s natural systems with a stated intention of stemming symptoms of global heating? Can you hit the ground running to launch an important new campaign on climate geoengineering at Friends of the Earth?

If so, this is the position for you. We want you to succeed, and we want to pay you a competitive wage that is in line with your experience. The salary range for this full-time role is $71,000-$79,000. This is a remote position, with a preference for the Washington, DC area. This position is part of the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union (NPEU) at Friends of the Earth.

Who You Are:

Campaign Leader:  Establish Friends of the Earth as a key player in geoengineering advocacy. Develop and implement a new climate geoengineering campaign to stop solar and marine geoengineering, with support from the Climate & Energy Justice Program Director. Create a foundational knowledge base of geoengineering policies and projects in the United States. Build a U.S. constituency critical of geoengineering among federal and other policymakers. Educate and mobilize environmental, climate justice, and other activist communities to raise alarm bells and oppose geoengineering policies and projects.

Thought Leader, Analyst, and Educator: Continually build and share expertise on both domestic and international policies and trends related to solar and marine engineering. Document, research, analyze, and watchdog (1) federal geoengineering policies, incentives, and investments; and (2) geoengineering projects and their public and private financiers. Write reports and articles, factsheets, and other campaign materials to educate decision-makers, allies, opinion leaders, the press, and the public.

Effective Communicator: Educate Congress and other federal policymakers about climate geoengineering and its dangers. Represent Friends of the Earth with policymakers, including the staff of Members of Congress and federal agencies and departments, in media interviews, and at public events. Effectively communicate campaign objectives and engage audiences.

Coalition Builder and Solidarity Partner: Build and support intersectional coalitions against solar and marine geoengineering with a diverse group of partners from varying backgrounds. Assist project-affected communities to amplify their voices.

Organizer: Facilitate and implement organizing strategies, including digital, communications, and on-the-ground actions such as protests.

Team Player: Engage collaboratively as part of a fast-moving and results-oriented team and work independently and effectively in a changing environment. Participate in fundraising activities, including cultivating and maintaining donor relationships and developing proposals and grant reports.

Required Qualifications:

·       Five to seven years of relevant work experience, with demonstrated success leading initiatives in project campaigning, organizing, and/or policy advocacy in progressive policy settings.

·       Excellent research, writing, and oral communication skills; strong attention to detail; and proven effectiveness in presenting material to a wide range of audiences, including the public, civil society organizations, the press, corporations, and government officials. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to inspire trust and respect among colleagues and external partners, including working well within diverse coalitions and across lines of difference.  

·       Excellent decision-making, team building, prioritization, and networking skills; demonstrated initiative, flexibility, and creativity. 

·       Excellent time management and ability to balance multiple priorities independently and effectively complete a wide range of short- and long-term campaign and other initiatives in a self-directed manner, including research and policy analysis, advocacy, online and offline organizing, public speaking, and communications.

Preferred Qualifications:

·       Working knowledge and understanding of Congress and executive branch processes.

·       Passionate and demonstrated commitment to social and environmental justice and the environment.
