Hello everyone!
Today, I’d like to discuss an exciting and effective way to build resilience: engaging in creative activities. Aside from environmentalism, my main passion is music, so being creative is one of my favorite ways to build resilience and sustain my climate work!
Being creative has many benefits that can also build our resilience. For instance:
- Creativity allows you to view things from a different perspective and make new connections, which translates to enhanced flexibility in challenging situations.
- Creative practices increase your problem-solving skills – something we can all benefit from as we face the climate challenge.
- Engaging in creative activities has been shown to encourage mindfulness and lower stress.
If these benefits sound appealing to you, but you need some inspiration on how to implement creativity into your climate work, check out one of my favorite resources, Creative Therapies for Climate Emotions! This guide from the Climate Mental Health Network provides ideas for various therapeutic art and dance practices to help process emotions surrounding climate anxiety. I love how many of these practices are designed to be done with other people. Sharing our challenging feelings about climate change with others is another excellent way to build resilience, and doing so within a creative context makes it even more rewarding.
There are plenty of other ways to engage in creative resilience-building: poetry, songwriting, photography – the possibilities are endless! Do you use any creative tools to process climate emotions?
