Reframing: Moving From Resistance To Support
The Importance of Reframing
Reframing is proposing a fresh perspective that engages us to build a better future together.
- Not with detailed, thorough analysis
- Not with relationship-building activities
- Not with negotiations and compromise
- Instead through deeper listening, connecting on values, and finding a better frame for productive collaboration
Four Steps To Reframing
- Listen more deeply:
Discover the values/concerns revealed by their views - Join where you can:
Add momentum, use their energy as a resource - Propose a better frame:
Base it on shared values, pointing to the future - Respond within the new frame:
Engage in dialogue with mutual respect
Examples of Reframing
Example #1:
Objection: COVID has broken our economy. Before addressing climate, we need to put millions back to work.Ā
Affirm Values: Yes, we absolutely need to repair our economy and ensure our resilience.
Propose A Frame:Ā So let's ābuild back betterā for economic recovery and for improved health and resilience.
Response: H.R.763 provides incentives for a healthier, cleaner energy economy while stimulating local prosperity.
Example #2:Ā
Objection:Ā The Energy Innovation Act will hurt the U.S. economy, despite border adjustments. We need to make our country great and win the race vs. competing countries.
Affirm Values: Yes, we need to ensure that this great country is winning as much benefit as possible.
Propose A Frame:Ā The USA wins more benefits by getting other countries to follow us in creating a low carbon future vs. our going it alone.
Response:Ā The Actās border adjustments will create the trade pressure so others follow U.S. leadership on climate. Thatās how the U.S. will benefit the most.
